The field, explained

What is transpersonal?

Transpersonal means beyond the personal. It names every approach — in psychology, therapy, coaching and leadership — that works with the ordinary self and with what reaches past it: meaning, purpose, awe, contemplative states, identity beyond role.

Conventional models stop at behaviour. They can change what you do. Transpersonal work goes one layer down, to who is doing it and why — which is usually where the pattern actually lives. That is the whole difference, and it is why the change tends to hold.

Where the word comes from

A fourth force in psychology.

Psychology's first three forces were psychoanalysis, behaviourism and humanistic psychology. In the late 1960s Abraham Maslow — who had spent a career studying self-actualisation and found something past it — worked with Stanislav Grof, Anthony Sutich and others to name a fourth: transpersonal psychology, the study of experience that exceeds the individual self.

What was once dismissed as unmeasurable is now routine research. Contemplative neuroscience images the meditating brain. Clinical hypnosis has an evidence base for pain, anxiety and trauma. Psychedelic-assisted therapy is in phase-three trials. The territory the transpersonal field claimed in 1969 turned out to be real territory.

The work on this site sits inside that lineage and adds one thing to it: measurement. Inner states are treated as capacities you can assess, track and grow — not moods you happen to have.

Four applications

One field, four rooms you can enter.

Transpersonal psychology

The research field. It takes self-transcendent experience — peak states, contemplative practice, ego dissolution, the sense of the sacred — as legitimate data about the human mind, and studies it with method rather than metaphor.

Transpersonal coaching

The developmental application. It works on the pattern beneath the goal: which identity is being defended, what the person is here to do, and how leadership changes when the inner driver changes. Formalised here as the ROUSER model.

Transpersonal hypnotherapy

The clinical application. Age regression to the root of a pattern, inner-resource work, past-life and Life Between Lives® regression — used to resolve what talking about the problem has not resolved.

Transpersonal leadership

The organisational application. A leader's unresolved material becomes the culture's weather. Transpersonal leadership treats the leader's inner state as a design variable of the organisation, not a private matter.

How the work moves

Shadow → Gift → Essence.

Across every application, the movement is the same three steps. It is the spine of the ICEF framework and of every session, assessment and book here.

01

Shadow

The material you disown — the fear, the shame, the reaction you would rather not admit. It does not disappear when refused; it drives from underneath.

02

Gift

The same material, met and metabolised, turns out to carry a capacity. The person who feared abandonment often becomes the one who can hold others without flinching.

03

Essence

What remains when neither the wound nor the compensation is running the show. In this work it is called Fundamental Peace — and it is measurable, not merely poetic.

Read the framework in full on ICEF, the movement itself on the Compass, and the book it comes from, The Transpersonal Leader.

Beyond the personal does not mean away from the person. It means far enough in that the person is no longer the whole of the story.

Questions

What people ask first.

+What does transpersonal mean?

Transpersonal means 'beyond the personal'. It describes approaches to psychology, therapy, coaching and leadership that include the ordinary personal self — history, personality, behaviour — and also the experiences that reach past it: meaning, purpose, awe, contemplative states, identity beyond role, and a sense of belonging to something larger.

+What is transpersonal psychology?

Transpersonal psychology is the branch of psychology, formalised in the late 1960s by Abraham Maslow, Stanislav Grof, Anthony Sutich and others, that studies spiritual and self-transcendent experience with the same seriousness as cognition or behaviour. It is sometimes called the 'fourth force', after psychoanalysis, behaviourism and humanistic psychology.

+How is transpersonal coaching different from ordinary coaching?

Ordinary coaching works on goals, behaviour and performance. Transpersonal coaching keeps all of that and adds the identity layer underneath it: what the person is protecting, what they are here for, and which inner pattern keeps regenerating the outer problem. The practical difference is that change tends to hold, because the driver was addressed rather than the symptom.

+What is transpersonal hypnotherapy?

Transpersonal hypnotherapy uses the hypnotic state not only for symptom relief but for insight — age regression to the origin of a pattern, inner-resource and guide work, and, where the client wishes, past-life or Life Between Lives® regression. It is clinical hypnotherapy with the transpersonal dimension left in.

+Is transpersonal work religious?

No. It is not tied to any tradition or belief system and it does not require you to hold one. It studies and works with the kinds of experience many traditions describe, using a secular, clinical and increasingly evidence-based method.

+Where should I start?

Start by measuring where you are. The FP20 assessment gives a four-component reading of your inner state in about ten minutes, and the ROUSER self-rating does the same for how you lead. Both are free and take you into the ICEF framework, which organises the whole map.

Begin

Ten minutes is enough to start.

Two free instruments give you a baseline: FP20 reads your inner state across four components, ROUSER reads how you lead across six pillars. Everything else on this site builds on those two numbers.
