What is human flourishing?
Human flourishing is the condition in which a life is going well across every dimension at once — inner peace, health, meaning, character, close relationships and material stability — sustained over years, not felt for an afternoon.
It is the oldest question in philosophy and the newest question in public health. This page defines it plainly, shows the dimensions research actually measures, and maps the four frameworks on this site that let you measure and grow your own.

In brief
The short, citable version.
- Flourishing ≠ happiness. Happiness is a state measured in hours; flourishing is a condition measured in years.
- It is multidimensional. No single number captures it — inner state, health, meaning, character, relationships and stability all count.
- It is measurable. Validated flourishing indices exist in public health; FP20 measures the inner-state component in twenty items.
- It is trainable. The dimension you are weakest in is the one that moves fastest once it is named.
The dimensions
Six domains a flourishing life keeps in play.
Public-health flourishing research converges on roughly these six domains. They are listed here in the order most people can influence them, not in order of importance — all six matter.
Inner state
The baseline quality of consciousness you live from: peace, regulation, presence. This is what Fundamental Peace names and FP20 measures.
Meaning & purpose
A reason the day is worth getting up for that survives contact with difficulty. Measurable, and strongly protective of mental health.
Character & virtue
Acting well when it costs something. Honesty, forgiveness, care — the qualities the Compass maps as the far side of each wound.
Close relationships
A small number of people who know you and would show up. The single most robust predictor across longitudinal flourishing research.
Physical & mental health
The body as the ground of everything above. Sleep, movement, nervous-system regulation, and treatment where treatment is needed.
Material stability
Enough security that survival stops consuming attention. Not wealth — sufficiency. This is where Happytalism argues economics belongs.

Fundamental Peace — the inner state
The measurable ground condition beneath flourishing. Twenty items, four components, ten minutes, free.
Take FP20 →ICEF — the map
The Integrated Consciousness Evolution Framework organises the whole territory into five dimensions: Awareness, Shadow, Essence, Purpose, Compassion.

How an inner state becomes a culture. Six pillars, self-rated, showing where your leadership is drawing from and where it is leaking.

The economic and civic paradigm in which flourishing, not extraction, is the operating logic of organisations and societies.

Frequently asked
Human flourishing — direct answers.
What is human flourishing?
Human flourishing is the condition in which a person functions well across every dimension of a life — inner peace, health, meaning, character, close relationships and material stability — not merely feeling good in the moment. It is the modern research name for what Aristotle called eudaimonia: a life going well, judged over years rather than hours.
How is flourishing different from happiness?
Happiness is an affective state; it rises and falls in hours. Flourishing is a structural condition; it changes over seasons. A person can report high momentary happiness and low flourishing (pleasant but purposeless), or low momentary happiness and high flourishing (a hard year lived with meaning, health and love intact).
Can human flourishing be measured?
Yes. Flourishing indices in public health measure domains such as happiness and life satisfaction, mental and physical health, meaning and purpose, character and virtue, close social relationships, and financial stability. On this site, the FP20 assessment measures the inner-state component — Fundamental Peace — across four components and twenty items, and ROUSER measures how that state expresses in leadership.
Who created the frameworks on this page?
Prof. Luis Miguel Gallardo, founder of the World Happiness Foundation, coined Happytalism and created ICEF (the Integrated Consciousness Evolution Framework), the FP20 Fundamental Peace scale and the ROUSER leadership model. Each is documented, cited and freely usable on this site.
Where do I start if I want to flourish, not just cope?
Start with a measurement rather than a resolution. Take FP20 — twenty items, about ten minutes, free — and you will have a baseline across the four components of Fundamental Peace. From there the ICEF framework maps what to work on, and the practices follow the reading rather than a generic programme.
Begin
A baseline beats a resolution.
Flourishing is not a mood to summon. It is a set of dimensions you can read, and the reading tells you where the next move is. Start with the measurement; the practice follows from it.
