Transpersonal coaching — beyond performance, into peace
Most coaching divides the human in half. Performance coaching addresses the work; therapy addresses the soul. The leader is asked to schedule them on different days and pretend they are not the same person. Transpersonal coaching refuses that split. It works with the whole life at once — the outer decisions, the inner architecture, the body, the values, the work and the meaning underneath the work.
The reframe: Fundamental Peace
Drawn from John Knights's research and the practice layer of Luis's book The Transpersonal Leader, transpersonal coaching extends conventional executive coaching by adding the inner dimension — self-awareness, emotional sovereignty, ego regulation, values, and a felt sense of being part of something larger than the role. From the FP20 view it cultivates all four components at once: Emotional Coherence, Inner Wisdom, Sense of Self and, indirectly, Outer Connection. The result is not a more enlightened leader and a separate competent leader. It is one person, finally indivisible.
Shadow · Gift · Essence
The high-performing leader privately running on empty. The split between Sunday meditation and Monday meeting. The slow erosion of the values that originally drove the work. The colleagues unable to name what feels wrong but feeling it.
An unusual capacity to hold complexity without collapsing into either spirituality-as-escape or performance-as-identity. The transpersonal stance lets you take action and remain a self.
A leader, parent, founder or human who acts from values, holds power without being deformed by it, makes hard decisions without losing their warmth, and goes home recognisable to the people who love them.
The practice
The Transpersonal Pause — a 10-minute weekly review
Same evening each week. Pen, paper, no screen. Sit somewhere you will not be interrupted.
Write three short answers. From whose voice did I act most this week — mine, or someone else's expectations? Which decision this week felt cleanest, and why? Which decision this week left a residue, and what was it?
From those answers, name one inner adjustment for the coming week. Not an action — an internal one. 'Speak more slowly in conflict.' 'Stop performing in the Monday call.' 'Notice when I am about to abandon myself to please.' One adjustment only.
Write a single sentence to your future self for the coming Sunday. 'May I have stayed close to ____.' Tape it where you will see it on Wednesday — the day most weeks fall apart.
Close the practice. The whole point of transpersonal work is that the weeks slowly stop being identical, because the person inside the weeks is slowly being met.
When to seek more support
Transpersonal coaching is not a substitute for therapy in active mental-health crises. If you are in burnout, severe depression, addiction recovery, complex grief or active trauma, please secure clinical care first. A serious transpersonal coach will help you do exactly that and will not begin a leadership arc on top of an unattended inner crisis.
Frequently asked
Is transpersonal coaching for me if I'm not 'spiritual'?
Yes. 'Transpersonal' here does not require any religious or spiritual framework. It simply means: relating to what is larger than your role, your ego and your immediate goals — your values, the people you serve, the long horizon of your life. Many of Luis's clients are secular leaders for whom transpersonal language is purely practical.
How does it differ from regular executive coaching?
Executive coaching, well done, addresses behaviour and decisions. Transpersonal coaching addresses behaviour, decisions and the inner architecture making both. The conventional coach asks what you want to change; the transpersonal coach also asks who is doing the wanting.
Where can I read more about the framework?
The Transpersonal Leader, by John Knights and colleagues, lays out the academic and practical model. Luis's own book of the same lineage applies the framework to everyday life. You can also explore the ICEF section of this site for a free overview.
