1. A New Kind of Intelligence

Every 0.24 seconds, a new human being draws its first breath. Four point two births per second. Three hundred and sixty-three thousand per day. One hundred and thirty-two point five million per year. By the time the Sustainable Development Goals reach their reckoning in 2030 — and by the time the world’s population approaches 9.7 billion in 2050 — approximately 3.3 billion children will have been born into this world.

The question that defines our generation is not whether these children will arrive. Demographic momentum ensures they will. The question is: into what conditions will they be born?
