As we approach the Chinese New Year of the Snake, a symbol of transformation, intuition, and rebirth, I am reminded of an extraordinary hypnotherapy session I recently had with Romina. She came to me carrying a profound fear of snakes—one that made her feel small, vulnerable, and invisible. Yet, through our work together, snakes transformed from a source of fear into an incredible symbol of determination and confidence for her.

This blog post shares her journey, the process we followed, and how the integration of her shadow with her essence led her to embrace a new chapter of empowerment.

Understanding Romina’s Fear

Before our session, we gathered vital information to understand the roots of Romina’s phobia. Here’s what we explored:

  • The Beginning: Her fear of snakes began during a childhood camping trip when she saw a snake slithering close to her tent.
  • Triggers: The sight of snakes in nature, images, or even the thought of them would immediately trigger panic.
  • Impact: She described her fear as a “8 out of 10,” leaving her feeling weak, unnoticed, and incapable.

Romina’s goal was clear: she wanted to overcome this debilitating fear and replace it with a sense of calm, control, and strength.

Preparing for the Session

To set the stage for transformation:

  • I explained how fears, especially phobias, are learned subconscious patterns that can be reprogrammed.
  • I assured her that we would proceed at her pace and that no real snakes would be involved in the session.
  • We defined her objective: to feel neutral and calm when thinking about or encountering a snake, whether in real life or imagery.

The Hypnotherapy Process

The session unfolded through six structured steps:

1. Induction and Relaxation

Using a progressive relaxation technique, I guided Romina into a state of deep calm. She visualized herself in a safe, serene forest where no snakes were present. We created a safety anchor—pressing her thumb and index finger together—to evoke a profound sense of tranquility whenever needed.

2. Exploring the Root Cause

Through a gentle regression, we revisited the moment of her childhood camping trip. In this memory, we rewrote the narrative: instead of helplessness, Romina imagined herself protected and safe, observing the snake as a harmless creature.

3. Reframing the Fear with Humor

Using a Fast Phobia Cure technique inspired by NLP:

  • I asked Romina to imagine watching her fear play out on a giant movie screen from a third-person perspective.
  • Together, we rewound the “movie” in reverse, adding absurd, humorous elements: snakes wearing funny hats, dancing salsa, and slipping on banana peels.
  • We repeated this several times, making the scenario so ridiculous that it became impossible to associate the snakes with fear.

4. Integrating the Shadow and Essence

Next, we worked on deeper integration. I asked Romina to imagine the snake as a symbol of her own shadow—representing her hidden fears, vulnerabilities, and moments of invisibility. Through guided visualization, she embraced the snake, realizing it also carried the essence of transformation, strength, and resilience.

Romina visualized the snake shedding its skin, symbolizing her own rebirth into a more confident version of herself.

5. Reprogramming Positive Beliefs

While still in trance, I introduced empowering affirmations:

  • “You are calm and in control in every situation.”
  • “Snakes are a part of nature’s balance, and you are safe around them.”
  • “Your strength grows when you face challenges with courage.”

We also created a new internal association: snakes as a representation of her inner determination and ability to overcome obstacles.

6. Visualizing a Future of Confidence

Romina imagined herself watching a nature documentary with snakes, walking calmly through a forest, and even seeing a snake in the wild. In each scenario, she felt grounded, neutral, and empowered.

The Transformation

By the end of the session, Romina opened her eyes and described a profound shift. Her fear, once paralyzing, had diminished to a “1 or 0” on the scale. Instead of seeing snakes as a threat, she now viewed them as symbols of resilience and adaptability—qualities she realized had always been within her.

Connecting with the Year of the Snake

The Chinese New Year of the Snake provided a powerful symbolic backdrop for Romina’s journey. In Chinese culture, the snake represents wisdom, rebirth, and intuition—qualities that Romina accessed during our session. By confronting her fear, she bridged her shadow and essence, stepping into a newfound sense of determination and self-assurance.
