The First Dive Is a Breath

On our new books and music, the senses as doorways to presence, and why Mindful Diving™ was born.

Presence has more than one door

Presence is not a thought. It is the moment every sense arrives at once, and nothing is left waiting at the door.

The ocean knows this better than any teacher. Beneath the surface, sight softens into blue and the horizon disappears. Sound slows down: the reef crackles, a distant boat hums, and your own breath becomes the loudest music in the world. Water holds the whole skin at once, cool and continuous, so the body can no longer pretend it is only a head. Salt lingers on the lips. And a sense we rarely name — balance, the inner feeling of where we are — learns to float.

On land we live through one sense at a time, usually the eyes, usually a screen. In the sea we are invited back into all of them together. That is why a single mindful dive can feel like coming home to a body we had forgotten we had.

The first dive is a breath

Every descent begins long before the water. It begins with one breath, taken on purpose.

Breath is the only bridge we are given between what we choose and what simply happens in us. We cannot will the heart to slow, but we can lengthen an exhale, and the heart follows. When a diver breathes slowly and fully, the nervous system hears a message older than language: you are safe here. Air lasts longer, buoyancy steadies, the mind stops rushing ahead of the body.

I have learned dozens of breathing techniques over the years — yogic pranayama, holotropic breathwork, the long square breath that slows toward one or two breaths a minute. What has brought me full awareness is never the technique alone. It is the whole body sensing, all at once, that it is at peace: under a full moon in Bali, drifting beside a mola mola at Nusa Penida, or years ago as a lifeguard watching the light move across a swimming pool in Madrid.

This is why we say the first dive is a breath. It carries the whole arc of our practice:

  • Before — prepare the mind: breathing, intention, emotional readiness, connection with the ocean.
  • Below — be there fully: presence, conscious breathing, buoyancy, observation without interference.
  • Between — bring the dive back to the surface: reflection, sharing, integration.
  • Beyond — let the sea change how we live: wellbeing, responsibility, purpose, conscious action.

Two books, one ocean

The Institute now has two books, written to be read slowly and carried into the water.

Mindful Diving is the source text of the Institute. It sets out why we dive, how presence changes the dive, and how the dive can change a life. It is the ground from which every course, every centre and every practice grows.

Mindful Breath — Breath management before, below, between and beyond the dive — is the companion to the Mindful Breath™ specialty. It gathers the most useful breathing practices of the world, from yogic pranayama to holotropic breathwork, and honours the great breath schools as allies rather than rivals. It offers a full "One Breath" path for freedivers, and a new guided meditation, The Tide. Its science rests on the Institute's 2026 review of breathwork research. It is also available in Castilian as Respiración Consciente.

One book teaches how to be in the sea. The other teaches how to breathe your way there.

Music for presence, depth and return

If the books speak to the mind, the music speaks to the body. Sound is the sense that reaches us first underwater, so it felt natural to give the practice its own voice.

The Ocean Within — Music for presence, depth & return — is an album of 11 tracks released in 2026. Its sister album, El Océano Interior — Música para presencia, profundidad y regreso — carries the same journey in Spanish. Listen before a dive to settle the breath, on the boat during a surface interval, or at home when the sea feels far away.

The single The First Dive Is a Breath — in Spanish, La primera inmersión es una respiración — is the song of Mindful Breath. It is a short invitation to stop, inhale, and begin.

A fundamental evolution

Mindful Diving™ was born to help bring about a fundamental evolution in humankind: from visiting the ocean to belonging to it, and from doing to being.

For decades, diving has taught us what to do underwater — how to equalise, how to read a gauge, how to ascend safely. That knowledge saves lives, and we honour every agency that teaches it. But something was missing. As we like to say: all agencies teach divers what to do underwater. We are creating a way to teach them how to be there.

How to be there is where the evolution lives. In our research we describe Fundamental Peace as an integrated capacity to stay regulated under changing conditions. It has four faces: attention that moves freely without forcing, emotions that stay coherent, a self that holds itself lightly, and compassion toward our own experience. The sea is changing conditions itself — currents, depth, light, the sudden visit of a turtle. Every mindful dive is a training ground for that peace.

"Fundamental Peace is not the absence of pain… it is the transmutation of its energy into love and compassion."

A diver who has felt this peace at twenty metres does not leave it on the boat. They bring it home, to their families, their work, their choices about the planet. That is how a practice becomes a movement, and how a movement becomes an evolution — one breath, one diver, one ocean at a time, toward ten billion people free, conscious and happy by 2050.

Practise consciously

You do not need the sea to begin. You need one breath, taken with your whole attention. Try this now, wherever you are:

  1. Arrive. Feel the weight of your body and whatever is holding it.
  2. Listen. Notice the sounds around you, then the quieter sound of your own breath.
  3. Lengthen. Breathe in gently through the nose; let the exhale be a little longer than the inhale.
  4. Sense. Let the breath touch every part of you — skin, belly, back, the space behind the eyes.
  5. Rest. For three breaths, change nothing. Simply be here.

That was your first dive.

When you are ready to go deeper, the books, the albums and the single are waiting for you on our Books & music page. Read them before you travel, listen on the boat, and let the ocean teach the rest.

See you in the blue.
