Fundamental Peace: the state beneath every peace we negotiate

Fundamental Peace: The Source Book

For thirty years I have watched people arrive at peace from the outside in — treaties, settlements, apologies, better arrangements — and lose it again within a season. The Source Book is my attempt to name what holds when the arrangement fails.

The coining

Fundamental Peace is not the absence of conflict, nor is it the presence of justice. Those are the first and second peaces, and both are necessary. The third is a state in the person: the inner ground from which a human being responds rather than reacts. It can be lost in an argument and recovered in a breath. It is trainable, and — this is the part people resist — it is measurable.

The perennial testimony

Part II of the book stands before the traditions rather than above them. Buddhist equanimity, Christian hesychia, Sufi sakina, yogic samatva, Stoic ataraxia and the ordinary sanity of a grandmother who has stopped needing to win: they describe the same terrain in different dialects. The Convergence Map lays their vocabulary side by side without collapsing any of them into the others.

The measure

The FP20 — twenty statements, four components, five minutes — turns a philosophical claim into an observable one. Two people can report identical totals and live entirely different inner lives; the book spends a full chapter on why that is a feature of the instrument rather than a flaw. What FP20 gives you is not a verdict. It is a mirror you can consult again in ninety days.

The method

Ground. Transmute. Choose. Return. The Ground Route is the daily engine: a short practice sequence that takes a glimpse and, through repetition, turns it into a stage. Two chapters are given to the six wounds — abandonment, rejection, humiliation, betrayal, injustice, insignificance — and to the five-step alchemy that carries each of them toward the virtue it has been hiding.

The living

The last part refuses to leave peace in the meditation room. Household, organization, city, nations, 2050: the same arithmetic, scaled. If Fundamental Peace is trainable in one person, it is trainable in ten billion — and that is not a slogan, it is a research programme with a timeline.
